Many people who are going in for their first service in January find that autumn can be a bit boring. Then a semester at folk high school can be a good option in the waiting period. Martin chose to invest in four fast-paced months on the line Preparing for First-Time Service, and has no regrets.

One of our students, Martin Strait, stopped by the office for a chat before finishing his fall course for Christmas.

How did you end up here on the line Preparing for First Time Service, Martin?

I had nothing to do between high school and first time service. Could have taken up subjects, of course, but I was pretty schooled after getting through high school, sort of. I got a tip from my mom. She thought I should go to folk high school, but that was NO on my part! I had no relation to folk high schoolAnd when I started looking at pictures, I thought it was definitely not relevant. But my mum didn't want me to just stay home and work at Jernia, so she kind of didn't give up. When we found this line, I became a little interested nonetheless, and thought that this might actually be something. We were a bit stressed applying because I thought it was going to be crowded, but we were actually only two students on the line this fall. I find that a bit strange, because the line is good! Since we were only two, we have been associated with the line Sports and Outdoor Activities on a daily basis. There have been 10 students here, so then we became a nice bunch of 12 when we had physical activity.

What do you think this semester at Folkehøgskole has given you from experience before entering the first service?

I've become a little more independent. At home, I'm treated like a child, if you know. My mom washes and folds my clothes for me and sort of all that. No one here does anything for me except cook for me. I have to get up and fix myself, and that's good. And the social has also been very good. I feel like I fixed it well. It sort of hasn't been a problem.

What have you gotten out of your line after you've been here with us?

I was in pretty good physical shape when I came here, because after all, I went to the sports line. Or, that is, around graduation and this summer when I've been working there really hasn't been that much time to train. After all, I worked until 9pm, and then I don't have much energy left for training. When I got here, it was much easier. It is heavy with strength training with Ulf on Monday morning after morning assembly, but when I finish it is really delicious. I guess you could say that I've got opportunity to maintain the shape Until I go to Milla.

What has been the highlight of the line Preparing for First-Time Service?

The highlight was when we were on Drevjamoen Military Camp. I didn't even know we were going there. I guess I hadn't really read enough on the line text before I arrived. I was kind of just going to train and have fun up here. We got a lot more done than I thought we were going to be allowed to, and that was Shitbra! We got to be in action in the exercises, lay out in the field and spend the night with room inspection, and it was really good, that is! Then we got to be join in on exercise and then we had a four-hour session with Sergeant Sindre Bjørkmo who gave us theory whether the military itself. He went through everything thoroughly, so now i am at least prepared for the theory and practicality of the field. We also went on a march where we were taught how to build a position and such. We sat and waited and waited and had no idea when something was going to happen. Then they suddenly began to shoot with bazooka and HK416 and we had to wear hearing protection and yes, IT was the highlight!

Do you have any other things that you've been into that you thought were good?

Yeah, I liked when we had Duotur. Ulf drove us out into the field with maps and told us to get back to the Top on our own. It was fun. We took it in one day. It was four miles and very tiring. The plan was to stay the night, but we just went 7 hours in a stretch. That's what the military is all about. Out into nature and just walk and walk and walk.

Do you have a call for other students who smell on the line Preparing for First-Time Service?

The line is nice in many waysand one prepares both for it The physical part and the theoretical. At the same time, you are at a folk high school so you get Social as well. Everything is set up for you to make it, and there are no extreme challenges. Sometimes you live a little on the edge, for example, when lying outside and it is very cold. All of a sudden the fire doesn't work or the weather turns to shit. It was raining on the duo trip when we walked four miles, and then suddenly one of the flashlights went out of power and it was dark. I can honestly say that is a very fine line!

Thanks for the talk and for getting to know you, Martin. And good luck with your First Time Service!
