How do you choose the right folk high school? It is wise to spend some time when choosing a folk high school. Where do you want to go to folk high school?

Is it important where the folk college is located? Some people think so, but for others it's not as important. If you are looking to challenge yourself and need something new and exciting. Then you should find a school that is some distance away, and maybe in a place that is a little different. Should you go southward or northward, to a large or small school, to a larger city or a smaller town? Start with what environment you come from. How much does it cost to attend a folk high school?

Lånekassen provides a base loan for Norwegian students up to 151,690 NOK for a year at Folkehøgskole (2026-2027). 40 percent of the loan can become a scholarship if you complete the school year. If you work a little the summer before you go to folk high school, then you have a little extra pocket money and you are doing well. There are a lot of lines that cost less than the base loan as well, so check the rate when choosing your course. What do you get left for the money? A year at a folk high school may seem expensive, but remember that you get food, housing, tuition, study trip and extracurricular activities is included the price. Plus lots of fun and great friends that are free!

Frilynt or Christian folk high school?

If it is important to you whether the school is Christian or Frilynt (liberal), then you can find an overview of it at Folkehogskole.no. The liberal folk high schools are generally not affiliated with particular organizations or denominations, while the Christian folk colleges are either owned by or closely associated with Christian organizations or denominations. But it do not have to be important, all schools are different.

The smartest thing you can do

Talk to someone who knows the school, call a friend or contact those schools that you find exciting. It's better to ask some lame questions first, than to be disappointed.
